Francisco was born in Sevilla, his parents were Antonio de Merlo and Juana Gerónima Barbosa. Merlo had married in Spain with María Teresa de Gámiz, after being widowed, Merlo remarried in Buenos Aires, on November 30, 1713 with Francisca del Toro, daughter of Damián del Toro and Lucía González de Marquina (of illustrious family). Francisco de Merlo and his wife Francisca del Toro, were godparents of Antonio Espinosa Barrionuevo descendant of Baltasar de Barrionuevo (spanish conquistador, born in Talavera de la Reina).
